GBIC stands for Gigabit Interface Converter. It is a hot swappable interface. Hot swappable means, even without power off of the equipment this item can be removed and replaced.
It WAS commonly used in gigabit ethernet . Now the use of this item is reduced because of the arrival of mini gbic. MINI GBIC is commonly called as SFP traceiver.
Description
Data Rate up to 1.25G
Transmitter Center Wavelength 850nm, 1310nm, 1550nm or CWDM DFB
5) Receiver PIN or APD
Applications
1) Fiber Channel
2) Ethernet

MINI GBIC(also called as SFP): It is an SFP fibre optic tranceiver. SFP means Small Form Factor Pluggable. it can support upto 10gbps speed. This form factor ss a popular industry format jointly developed and supported by many network component vendors.
SFPs are used in routers,switches,dslam tier-1 and tier-2 switches,networkgateways,etc.
this is SFP that is mini GBIC. It is hot swappable. |

By seeing the color of the handle, you can identify the speed and wavelength range of these trancivers..
The following table shows different types of SFPs of Cisco Make.
Part Number | Description | Color Code |
---|---|---|
